Reverend Crews to wash feet of homeless as politicians chase votes

by Team Bill 30 Nov 1999

While politicians criss-cross the country making billion-dollar promises to court voters this Easter, Reverend Bill Crews will turn his attention to those often overlooked during election campaigns.

The founder of The Rev. Bill Crews Foundation, which provides more than 370,000 meals annually to the homeless and hungry, will perform the ancient Christian ritual of washing the feet of rough sleepers on Thursday.

The ceremony, which mirrors Jesus washing the disciples' feet and is one of Easter's most significant observances, carries deep symbolic meaning as a call for the powerful to demonstrate humility and service to others. Even the Pope performs this ritual at the Vatican.

“Jesus called on us to look after our brothers and sisters. As the gap between the rich and the poor widens, that message is more important than ever — especially during an election campaign", said Reverend Crews.

Known for his outspoken advocacy for society's "outsiders," Reverend Crews has frequently challenged those in positions of power. His decision to hold this ceremony amid the election campaign's frenzy of promises directed at "entitled" voters serves as a pointed reminder of those less visible in political discourse.

The ritual will take place at the well-known Loaves & Fishes Free Restaurant within the foundation's Ashfield premises, marking the beginning of Easter week celebrations in Sydney.
