Today: Sydney’s biggest free Christmas lunch for the needy

by Team Bill 25 Dec 2019
The spirit of Christmas will shine at Rev. Bill Crews’s big, free Christmas Day lunch for the needy today. Hundreds of volunteers, including the Hon. Anthony Albanese MP, will serve lunch to thousands of struggling families, the lonely and the homeless. Plus, Santa will have presents for them all!

It is the biggest free Christmas lunch for the poor and homeless in Sydney. In fact Rev. Crews AM and his team will serve over 55 turkeys, 80 hams, half a tonne of veggies and 2,700 mini-puddings!

What’s more, Rev. Crews’s food vans will also take Christmas meals on the road, to the street corners and bus shelters where the homeless live.

This year marks the 34th anniversary of Rev. Crews’s free Christmas lunch in Ashfield and each year it grows bigger.

“We have multiple sittings of 900 people. It’s the only way we can feed all the thousands who attend”, said Rev. Crews.

Indeed, this year Rev. Crews is expecting more people than ever because more Sydneysiders are struggling to make ends meet. There are also more rough sleepers, more battlers and more lonely people.

Rev. Crews and his team try to make Christmas extra special for the needy. “We make sure everyone feels special. All our guests have a family here with me and my team on Christmas Day!”, he said.
